Cash back is simple and safe. Travel points offer bigger rewards, but only if you have the time and flexibility to hunt for great deals.
What is Cash Back?
Cash back offers a simple deal. The credit card company gives you a percentage of your spending back in cash. It is the most straightforward reward. Most cards provide a flat 1.5% or 2% return on every purchase you make, while others give more, sometimes up to 5%, in categories that change over time like gasoline or groceries. For a $2,000 purchase, a 2% card earns you $40. It’s clean.
The value is fixed. That is its greatest strength and its main weakness. Forty dollars is always forty dollars. You cannot turn it into a $500 plane ticket through clever booking. The reward is money. It’s useful for anything, from paying down your card balance to buying coffee. For people who value simplicity and predictability, cash back is a clean, easy win. You get the reward without any extra work.
How Travel Points and Miles Work
Points and miles are a different world. They are a private currency, created and controlled by banks and airlines. You earn them by spending, but their value is not fixed. This is the essential difference. A point’s worth is a mystery until the moment you redeem it.
Think of it like an arcade token. You buy a token for a quarter. One token gets you one game of Pac-Man. But what if the arcade owner changes the price to two tokens per game tomorrow? Your tokens just lost half their value. That is exactly what happens with points and miles. An airline can change its award chart overnight, requiring more miles for the same flight. Let’s use an example. A flight from Chicago to Los Angeles costs $400 in cash. The same flight costs 25,000 points plus $11.20 in government-mandated taxes.
The value you get is ($400 – $11.20) / 25,000 points.
That equals $0.0155, or 1.55 cents per point.
On a card that earns 2 points per dollar, you would have spent $12,500 to get those 25,000 points. The same spending on a 2% cash back card would have earned you $250. You used your points to get a value of $388.80 (the $400 ticket minus fees), so the points were a better deal in this case.
But what if you cannot find a good flight? Many card programs let you redeem points for gift cards or merchandise. Redeeming for merchandise is a path to poor value. Those same 25,000 points might get you a $200 gift card. Your value is now 0.8 cents per point. A simple 2% cash back card would have been more than twice as rewarding. The potential for high value with points comes with the very real risk of getting very little value.
Who Are Points For? The Flexible Traveler
Travel points are best for a small group of people. You need to be a frequent traveler with flexible plans. If you can travel Tuesday instead of Friday, or in May instead of June, you will find better deals. Points reward flexibility.
You also need to enjoy the process. Finding the best redemptions is a time-consuming puzzle. It involves checking multiple airline websites, understanding transfer partners, and sometimes even calling booking agents in other countries. For some, this is a fun hobby. For most, it is a chore. If you do not have the time or interest to learn the system, you will not get the maximum value from your points. Bank points that transfer to many different airlines offer the most options, but also the most complexity.
Who Are Miles For? The Airline Loyalist
Airline-specific credit cards, the ones that earn miles with a single carrier, are even more specialized. These cards lock you into one ecosystem. That is their biggest drawback.
The main benefit is not the miles themselves, but the perks. Things like free checked bags, priority boarding, and airport lounge access. These benefits have a clear dollar value. A family of four checking bags on just one round-trip flight can save over $240, assuming a $30 bag fee. If you live in an airline’s hub city and fly that airline regularly, the savings on perks alone can justify the annual fee. The miles are a bonus. For everyone else, the lack of flexibility is a major problem.
The Winner Is Cash Back (For Most People)
For most people, cash back is the best credit card reward.
It’s simple. It’s certain. A 2% return is a 2% return. You do not need to read blogs, search for award availability, or worry about devaluations. The money shows up as a statement credit or in your bank account. The complexity of travel rewards programs is a significant hidden cost. It requires hours of research to use them well. A March 2024 report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau highlighted how complicated and opaque these rewards programs can be for consumers. Many people collect points for years only to redeem them for pennies on the dollar because travel booking is too hard.
Travel rewards are not a scam. For the dedicated few who travel often, have flexible schedules, and enjoy the game, they offer tremendous value. A single redemption can be worth thousands of dollars. But these people are the exception, not the rule.
