Calculators

Three calculators for the decisions people actually agonize over. Everything runs in
your browser, nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.

How long will it take to pay off this card?

The number most people never see is what the minimum payment costs over time. The comparison line
shows it.

Time to pay off
Total interest
Paying the 2% minimum instead

Assumes a fixed rate, no new purchases and no fees. A real statement may set the minimum differently.

Is a balance transfer worth the fee?

A transfer fee of 3% to 5% is charged the day you move the balance, while the saving arrives over
the promotional months. Whether it nets out depends on how much you can pay each month.

Is a balance transfer worth the fee?

Fee you pay up front
Interest you avoid
Net result
Left when the promo ends

Assumes the promotional rate is exactly 0% and that you keep the same payment. Anything left when the promo ends goes back to the card rate.

Card debt or a personal loan?

Swapping expensive debt for cheaper debt is not the same as borrowing more. Both rates below start
at the current national averages.

Card debt versus a personal loan

Monthly payment on the card
Monthly payment on the loan
Total interest saved

Both figures assume the same payoff window, no origination fee and no new spending on the card. An origination fee of 1% to 8% is common and reduces the saving.

How we report

Every article is written by a named person and checked against primary sources: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Reserve and issuer terms. When a number changes, we update the piece and say when.

How we make money

Some pages contain partner links that may earn us a commission. This never changes what we publish and costs you nothing. No lender pays for placement or for a better review, and nobody outside the newsroom sees a piece before it runs.

What we are not

Hub for Credit publishes independent information about credit cards, loans, and consumer finance. We are not a bank, a lender, or a card issuer, we do not extend credit, and we do not broker applications. Nothing here is personalized financial advice.
